Generally about the feed
The feed is intended to be the primary communication tool of Uintra, it is designed to show Events, News and bulletin posts to the users.
It is based on the social conventions presently used by LinkedIn and Facebook so the interface should be familiar to almost anyone.
Activities that show up in the feed
The news post is designed to present news, mainly intended for a more formal type of post.
The event post as the name suggest is made for creating events, events can be subscribed to by the users who can be contacted through this subscription.
Bulletin posts are meant for more casual posting, there’s no set standard to these posts and no requirements either.
It is an easy way to communicate to the users of the platform and if a certain post is particularly important, it can be stickied to the top of the feed for an adjustable amount of time.
Posts from groups also show in the feed, however only people included in the group can see posts from the group in the feed. The group from which the post came is identifiable by the name as shown in the red box. All group posts are marked with the symbol of three people together.
News and events post can have a location geomarked when creating them:
When they are marked they will show up in the feed with a location like this:
When clicking this location, a new tab will open with the location showing in Google maps.
The feed also has a filter available. It can be opened by clicking on the "Filter" text in the white box
When opened, posts can be filtered on type and importance.
How to set up the feed in Umbraco
The feed can be set up on the main page. In order to set up the feed, two panels are used. "Activity Create Page" is the first one, it is used for the input field and the second is the "Central Feed" panel which is the feed itself.
In this example we will set up a feed like the one shown in the Uintra demo.
1. Start by going to the "Content" tab in the left menu of the Umbraco page.
2. If there's no page called "Home", click the "..." Icon
3. Choose "Home Page", this will create a Home page folder.
4. With the home page created, go to the "Navigation" tab and give the home page a proper "Navigation Name"
5. Next go to the Home "Content" tab, to the left of the "Navigation" tab seen in the picture above.
6. Click "Add a row"
7. Click "Add content". This opens a box where several different panels can be chosen
8. Choose "Activity create"
You page should look something like this now:
9. On the newly created "Activity Create Page" click "Edit", this opens an editor page to the right with a drop down menu
10. Set the drop down menu to "Bulletins"
11. Click the green "Submit" button when finished.
The "Activity Create Page" decides which type of input form the user will see above the feed. In the demo version it is the bulletin input form, however if you choose "News" or "Events" in the drop down menu in section "10.", it will show the input form for "News" or "Events" posts respectively. These forms are a lot larger than the bulletin and will impact the design as such.
12. Now the first part of the feed is set up, make sure to save your work in Umbraco by clicking the green "Save and publish" or "Save".
13. For the second part start by clicking the green "Add content".
14. This opens the box with panels from stop 8. This time choose the panel called "Central feed". This will create a second box called "Central Feed" below the "Activity Create Page" box.
Your page should look like this now:
15. Click the "Edit" button under the "Central Feed". This will open an editor to the right very similar to the one step 10. In this editor however the drop down menu decides what type of information the feed should show. The options in the drop down menu are:
- None: The feed doesn't show anything
- All: The feed shows all types of activities
- News: The feed only shows news activities, no events or bulletins.
- Events: The feed only shows event activities, no news or bulletins.
- Bulletins: The feed only shows bulletin activities, no events or news.
In this example we will choose "All". After choosing all press the green "Submit" button. Then save and publish your work.
This concludes the setup of the feed.
